Leon P. Minear, former pricipal of Benson, passed away on Oct. 15, 2008 at the age of 93.

As I understand it, he was largely responsible for Benson as we know it today.  You can read his full Oregon obituary here:

What a great man Dr. Minear was.  He had the ‘vision’ of Benson and the future that it could become.  I was fortunate to attend Benson during the time Minear was Superintendent of PPS .... from 1960-64.  Even as a Benson student, Dr. Minear’s name was heard often.

Discovering what the current proposal of the Superintendent of PPS is trying to do to Benson is complete wacko.  Why would you want to take such a successful school and ‘dumb it down’ to a 2-year trade school?  It is an insult to me and all graduates of Benson.  Four years at Benson brought a solid academic background and technical courses that no other Portland area high school could offer.

Save Benson .... and continue the legacy.
